Rabobank NYC Headquarters Relocation - NY, NY

Client: Rabobank

Summary: The design of Rabobank's new Manhattan headquarters, by SIGMA7, produced a space that reflects the bank's commitment to collaboration, engagement, and transparency, while also incorporating sustainable and environmentally conscious features.

Rabobank, an international cooperative bank with Dutch origins dating back more than 125 years, collaborated with SIGMA7 for their New York City Headquarters. After more than four decades at the same location, it was time for a change. Following a real estate search, 151 W 42, the nation’s first ‘green skyscraper,’ was selected for their new office location as it echoed the bank’s policies for sustainability and environmental consciousness.

The design of the new headquarters reflects the Banks commitment to collaboration, engagement, and transparency. The entry lobby, clad in wood planking, features custom designed rugs and subway signs that reflect the strong historical link between the Dutch New Amsterdam and modern New York.

The reception area features a historical timeline and biophilic wall. These plantings and other greenery throughout the space provide natural filtration of the air and a fresh supply of oxygen. The interior greening extends onto the large landscaped outdoor terrace, accessible to all with tables and seating groupings for an informal meeting while offering an amazing vantage point to Times Square and “The Ball.”

The minimalist and modern furnishings of the office are a combination of new, relocated and reused furnishings; a true reflection and integration of their sustainability and other core policies. The open floor plate seating is hotel based in support of the collaborative and team-based work ethic. Each ergonomic workstation includes a sit/stand desk, outfitted with multiple arm mounted monitors, a docking station, and wireless accessories. The entire space features wireless connectivity -- apart from the hardwired trading floor. The traders are supported by UPS and Generator backed-up power, to maintain business as usual, 24x7x365. The space is well lit with every desk in close proximity to a window enhanced with LED lighting that includes daylight, occupancy and vacancy sensors to regulate lighting levels, reduce energy consumption, and enhance efficiency.

Acoustically treated teaming, meeting, and conference rooms are seamlessly integrated into the space, each outfitted with integrated A/V and Telecom capability to facilitate teaming across the globe. Each room features a super graphic of natural produce, energy, or production related images, reflective of the brand sectors and policies. The spacious boardroom comfortably accommodates twenty-two at the table for large meetings including those with frequent international visitors and dignitaries.

The rotunda and pantry (located at the top of the Nasdaq sign in Times Square) is designed and used as a flex space for meetings, large presentations and gatherings, as well as a break and lunchroom. This large area continues to reinforce Rabobank’s core values. No paper cups or plastic utensils here, hundreds of branded glasses and coffee mugs are proudly displayed and used by all!

The design of Rabobank’s new headquarters executed by SIGMA7 demonstrates the bank’s success in realizing a workplace that embodies its commitment to sustainability, collaboration, and transparency. This achievement was accomplished without incurring additional costs, while ensuring a comfortable and efficient environment conducive to employee productivity and satisfaction.
