Power Enhancement Project Enterprise Data Center

Client: Confidential Financial Client

Summary: SIGMA7’s innovative and resourceful design solution and infrastructure enhancements transform an existing data center, ensuring robustness and scalability while maintaining operational continuity. The infrastructure enhancement solution doubles the facilities power, cooling, and production capacity while providing a unique high-density capable data center within a traditional data center.

SIGMA7 was retained to review this clients portfolio of enterprise data centers across the US, as part of a new consolidation effort. Following the due diligence review of each of the facilities and the creation of a master plan for future development, several facilities were earmarked for infrastructure and production capacity expansion.

This facility, the first scheduled to be upgraded as part of the Power (and Capacity) Enhancement Project (PEP), will be reconfigured to include a new high-density data hall within the existing data center facility. The programmatic and operational requirements will more than doubles the critical infrastructure capacity and production capabilities of the facility.

The design team worked closely with the public utility, as the project necessitated the installation of new diverse and redundant services from two geographically separated utility substations to support this effort. The new infrastructure features 2N - 7,500kVA incoming electrical services at 23KV, supporting the 3N/2 critical electrical and mechanical systems. Electrical distribution to the high-density production PODs, 2N (A/B), with up to 20kW cabinet loads on a 24” access floor.

The electrical infrastructure is supported by three (3) 3MW generators, backing up three (3) - three (3) 750kW module UPS systems delivering 3,600kW of useable capacity to the floor. Cooling is provided by three (3) new 400Ton air cooled chillers (ACCH) distributed within the access floor on a new chilled water loop. Cooling will be provide by CRAH units. The cooling will be supplement with excess capacity available from the existing water-cooled chiller plant.

The new infrastructure will be installed within a combination of new secure equipment yards and a critical infrastructure addition, as well as within the existing facility.

The project is currently on hold due to market volatility.
